Why bother with Neighbourhood Watch ?

Criminals wreck lives and destroy confidence.  They influence the price we pay for goods, increase our insurance premiums, cost millions of pounds in damage to property, create a culture of fear and hold us prisoners to their trade.

We should, therefore, take every opportunity to interfere with this assault on our way of life.  If you see anything of a criminal nature, don't say nothing will be done about it, but do something there and then - like phone the Police.  That way, you will benefit the whole community and feel good into the bargain about having played your part.

Leonie White
Police Community Support Officer
St Andrews Ward, Franklands Ward

Leonie WhiteI became a PCSO in November 2006, prior to which I'd worked for local government on the environmental projects side. I became a PCSO because I wanted to continue to lead an active outdoor role, but in a job that gave me an opportunity to really get involved within the community, helping to solve community issues.

My main focus is to be a visible presence on the streets, whilst aiming to create links and build trust with the community.

I really enjoy being a PCSO - it's a chance to get out and about, see new faces and meet new people.

Meet me in person

I will next be at: St Andrews Community Centre, Cants Lane Burgess Hill
Date & Time:  at 12:30h to 14.30
on the first Monday in the month.

Purpose of meeting: I will be holding a Police drop - in surgery until 1430hrs. Please come along if you have any local community issues or concerns. You don't need to book, just pop by!

If you have any local concerns or issues you’d like to discuss please feel free to approach us when you see us out and about – that’s what we’re here for!

Power Tools

Sussex Police receive regular reports of power tools being sold around the county from the back of vans.

These power tools are being offered at very low prices.  Members should be aware that they may be counterfeit and there is always the possibility that they may not comply with safety requirementsPlease be on the lookout for these sales and report them to the police or to Trading Standards on 01903 839749.

Tradesmen

These tools are stolen from parked vans and trucks.  Make sure your vehicle is secure and parked in a well lit area at night.  If this is not possible, remove high value items and store them separately.  This type of crime is quite prevalent, so don't make your gear an easy target.

Telephone Scam

You receive a telephone call from an

individual who identifies himself as

being a BT (or other phone company)

Service Technician, or anyone else who is

conducting a test on that line, and asks

you to do the following – DON'T.

They will state that to complete the test the recipient should dial nine zero (90), then the hash key and then hang up.  This will give them access to your 'phone line,

which allows them to place long distance,

international or chat-line calls which are

then billed to your account.  The

information which the Police have,

suggests that many of these  calls

emanate from prisons.

DO NOT KEY IN 90 FOR ANYONE.

ALERTSIf you want your vehicle broken into - don't forget to leave handbags, mobile phones and other valuables in view.  Otherwise, thieves won't have an incentive to break in and steal.   You would be surprised just how many people do this every day and then complain about crime levels!  .................  A reminder to lock doors and windows - even if you are around the house or in the garden.  Too many burglaries are being committed via the 'open sesame' of unsecured doors and windows. ...................Satellite navigation systems are very attractive to thieves..........if you leave sat. nav holders attached to a window....then leave the glove compartment open......so thieves can see that you haven't left the main system on board.....if you don't do this, they will break into your car just in case it's in the glove compartment........ends

Noisy, aggressive and

inconsiderate neighbours?

Use this constantly updated website to discover your options:

Now that it gets lighter earlier....

Please remind yourself that this is a high season for thieves.  Peak time for burglaries is around 5 pm.

Always, if you are out in the garden, make sure you haven't left any windows open, which will allow your home to be burgled without you knowing.

When you do go out in the evening, make sure your house  looks occupied.  Leave lights on, even if you are only going out for a short time.  Just look at houses that are dark and you can see what an invitation to burgle is offered.

Thieves are opportunists and only spend an average of four minutes in a property.  So, don't help them to increase their haul by making it easy.

Tarmaccers visit the area regularly.

They can be intimidating, so do not be tempted by low quotes -"because they are working in the area" - but get descriptions and vehicle numbers.  You can really 'put it up 'em' by getting their reg. no.

Their method of operation includes the following:

  • Claiming tarmac is left over from Council Job
  • Demanding very high amounts of cash for little work
  • Taking consumers to the bank to withdraw cash
  • Entire driveway dug up when only small amount of work agreed

These traders are proving elusive and give  bogus addresses.  Please be on your guard and contact Trading Standards to report any  incidents, on: 01903 839749.

Sussex Police advise of a scam currently in the County.

A card is put through the door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) saying that they have a parcel awaiting delivery instructions and for the recipient to call them on 09066 611911.

The advice is NOT to ring this number as it will use a premium rate number charging  £1.50 per minute.  ICSTIS, the premium rate services regulator, is currently investigating the service, which originates from a company in Belize .

If you are aware of colleagues of neighbours who may have fallen victim to the scam, they may be somewhat reassured to know that reports that the call  will immediately incur a fee of £15, are false - as it is impossible to charge this amount for connection alone although, of course the charge per minute does apply.

11th April 2006

Exploding the Myth

ICSTIS, (the Regulator responsible for premium rate numbers) has received dozens of enquiries about 'scams', which are being widely publicised by e-mail.

In the first case, the apparent 'deception' takes place when people receive a recorded message saying that they’ve won an all-expenses paid holiday and are asked to press 9 to hear further details. It is then claimed that callers are connected to a £20.00 per minute premium rate line that will still charge them for a minimum of five minutes even if they disconnect immediately. It is also claimed that, if callers stay connected, the entire message costs £260.00.

In the second case, the apparent 'deception' takes place when people receive a missed call from a number beginning 0709. It is then claimed that, if callers dial this number, they are connected to a £50.00 per minute premium rate line.

Please note that these stories are NOT true. - £20.00 per minute and £50.00 per minute premium rate tariffs do not exist - the highest premium rate tariff available is £1.50 per minute. Despite the dozens of enquiries received by ICSTIS about these 'scams' (and most people appear to have heard about them second or third-hand), not one person who claims that it has actually happened to them has been able to produce a phone bill to support their story.

ICSTIS urges any individual or organisation that receives an e-mail about these 'scams' to delete it immediately. Please do NOT forward it to others.
