Venue: Manor Field School

Public Meeting

Wednesday 10th May 2006

An illustrated talk by the Society of Sussex Downsmen. This is a highly recommend talk which belies its rather dry description, with a high standard of slide presentation. With the planned change of status to a national park, the future of the South Downs is of concern to many people.

  A Wander Around Worlds End

traffic - what traffic?

Over 80 people attended an illustrated talk by Mark Dudeney on Wednesday 19th October, at Manor Field School.   This was another in the series of the very popular talks by our local historian and was so successful, that members had to be thrown out at the end of the evening!

1900 or Thereabouts

An illustrated talk was given by member Don Weller,  October 2003.

Don Weller

It consisted of a tour of Brighton, Hove and other places, as seen on the postcards of the time.

It was a potted history of Brighton, Hove, Ovingdean, Saltdean and surrounding areas, illustrated by a unique collection of postcards made by Don Weller over many years.

Part of the 62 strong audience

Don is well known locally for his illustrated talks, and he uses postcards to trigger his knowledge of some interesting background facts about the views, as he shows them.

Don is Brighton born and bred which is why he knows the stories behind the pictures, and he impressed the audience by presenting the hour long talk without once referring to any notes.

Also included in Don's talk were some old time seaside postcards and photos of Brighton celebrities from 1900 or thereabouts.  The latter got the audience laughing - some helplessly - when they saw the photos of 'Dizzy' and the lady who stood on a barrel and rolled it from London to Brighton,  There were others equally as funny.

Don concentrating on a 'tricky' question!

At the end of the talk, Don answered questions and everyone carried on enthusiastically discussing  the talk over refreshments.  It was pleasing to know that the Association could present such a successful event entirely from its own resources.
